A few (unofficial) definitions.....
Step/Move | Description |
Back rock | Rock back on to L or R foot, recover forward on to the other foot |
Ball change | Quick change of weight from one foot to the other, usually preceded by a kick or heel touch |
Box step | Sequence of steps usually linked in 8 counts in a box shape, starting on either foot. Can start by moving forward or to either side |
Brush | Swinging the foot forward or back, brushing the floor on the way |
Chasse | Syncopated side shuffle, to either L or R |
Coaster step | 3-step syncopated (usually) movement forward (forward, together, back) or backward (back, together, forward) starting on either foot |
Cross and unwind | Cross one foot either in front of or behind the other and unwind for a half, three-quarter or full turn |
Cross rock | (Forward) Rock forward across one foot and recover back; (Back) rock backward and behind one foot and recover forward |
Grapevine | 4-step movement to the side (can be extended), stepping side-behind-side-close (or touch). Sometimes ends with a quarter turn |
Heel grind | Put weight on heel and arc the toes across, over two counts |
Heel jack (Left) | Step diagonally back right, touch left heel diagonally forward, step left to centre and and touch or step right next to left (Right) starts on opposite foot |
Jazz box (Left) | Cross left over right, step back on right, step left to left side and close right beside left. (Right) starts on opposite foot |
Lock step | 3-step movement, forward or back, locking the second foot behind or across the front of the other |
Monterey turn (Left) | Touch L to L side, on ball of R make half turn left stepping L beside R. Touch R to R side, step R beside L. (Right) starts on opposite foot. Can also be done with a quarter turn instead of a half |
Pivot | A turn where one foot is forward of the other and a quarter or half turn is made on the balls of the feet |
Toe strut | Step forward or back in two separate movements: toe then heel |
Vaudeville (Left) | Step diagonally back on L foot, cross R over L. Step diagonally back on L, touch R heel diagonally forward right. (Right) starts on opposite foot |
Weave (Left) | Cross R over L, step L to left. Cross R behind L, step L to left. (Right) starts on opposite foot |
